To ensure that no one, not even the highest-ranking official, is above the law, the rule of law entails that the formation of statutes, their enforcement, and the linkages between legal regulations are themselves regulated. The government is just as bound by the law as its citizens are, thanks to the legal constraints on rulers. A related concept is that of "equality before the law," which states that no "legal" person shall enjoy privileges not afforded to others and that no person or legal entity shall be free from the legal consequences of committing a crime. When the courts listen to the complaints of marginalized groups or individuals who hold differing viewpoints, they strengthen the rule of law. When a majority, whether intentionally or accidentally, violates the rights of a minority, the courts should hear both sides of the story in order to protect the principle of equality before the law, which is fundamental to any system of governance.Presented in this book are various anecdotes and letters written to government officials of Canada that, in my view, failed to uphold the rule of law in a case of unfair dismissal. The book revolves around my termination, without any reason, from CIBC. My story also illustrates the discrimination that people of colour face in their daily and professional lives and attempts to highlight the negative impact that people in high offices can have on the lives of their citizens.
