Excerpt from Determinism: False and TrueElsewhere1 I have definitely endorsed the avowal of Canon Henson that before the gospel can be reasonably considered, there must be at least agree ment in the postulate of Theism, and as following from that, in the moral responsibility of man. That Christian churches on all occasions assume the former, and ordinary members of human society the latter, is too manifest to call for proof. Speaking generally, such a proceeding is in each case equally necessary and wise. But in days when literally everything is called in question, it becomes also wise and necessary not only to justify assumptions, but to repeat such justification even to the point of weariness for it is only by means of repetition that even fundamental truths obtain permanent hold of the average human mind. Certainly, so far as the Christian faith is concerned, the refusal to do this, in modern light, will increasingly be ascribed either to cowardice in fearing to defend a cause which is held to be true, or hypocrisy in refusing to face the exposure of what is known to be false.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
