Our ancient crafts are made from a variety of materials such as clay, grass, lacquer, gum and others. But the art of making beautiful miniature sculp- tures out of bread is an art that began in the West. Artists of wax portraits in the eighteenth century were known to make some of these portraits to formulae of their own, using materials from candle wax to potato and wheat flour. I like to think that instead of plain wheat flour or maida, some of these portraits were modelled from bread dough.This art caught my eye when I was in America and on probing further into the subject, I discovered that it originated in Mexico. It holds promise for those in India who wish to express their creative selves in turning out beautiful things from the cheapest of materials—a couple of slices of bread!I am quite sure that it will enjoy great popularity in India.
