Jamie Aldrich has never heard of the Osage Reign of Terror, the horrible kidnappings and murders of the oil-rich members of the Osage Tribe in the 1920s, the FBI's first case. All that changes when she returns to Pawhuska, Oklahoma after a thirty-year absence to check on her great aunt Elizabeth.
Soon after her arrival, Elizabeth tells Jamie, "my whole life has been a sham." Minutes later, her aunt lies in a coma, the victim of an attack. Jamie has no idea who would want to harm her aunt, but it becomes clear that the danger hasn't passed. While Elizabeth remains in the hospital, Jamie is repeatedly threatened and meets with several strange "accidents."
The longer she stays, the more she feels she can't trust anyone in Pawhuska -- not even Sam, the first man she's had feelings for since her husband died.
