BOP operates three main types of segregated housing units: (1) SHUs, (2) SMUs, and (3) the ADX facility in Florence, Colorado. BOP also operates Communications Management Units (CMU), where conditions of confinement are similar to general population and inmates are allowed to congregate outside their cells for up to 16 hours per day.
