Because humans didn't have magic, they were suffering. But, 1000 years ago, a human Mage discovered new magic. Borrowed magic. No one remembers this Mage. People argue about their inspiration and methods of making the first borrowed artifact. But this human placed a magical creature extremity inside a gemstone to create a Borrowed Artifact and unleashed... borrowed power. This artifact would allow for humans to channel magic power through their bodies to fight back against their oppressors. Hundreds of years passed and borrowed magic became more and more prominent.
