Glasgow has a long and rich railway history and was once one of the world's foremost centres of railway engineering. The city is home to the largest suburban rail network in the United Kingdom outside of London, and also to the third oldest underground system in the world; a reflection of being the Second City of the Empire at that time. Over the years there has been investment and expansion, but also closures and uncertainty.
