You will likely recall, either as a child or in rearing your own children, when on a trip, one pipes up from the back seat, “Are we there yet?” In many ways this book is an extension of Worth the Room, my autobiography. It is a pot pourri of things: essays, book reviews, and social comment among them. Articles have found their way into this book because there was no fixed place for them in my other books. “Are we there yet?” considers many ideas of the past, present and future, with an eye on where we must head in order to fulfill our destiny as a country and world. Although many of these pieces are dated, this alone proves their value in such a volume because, unfortunately, and in most cases, history repeats itself. The mistakes made by our forebears are the same mistakes that we poor mortals still make, a century or more later. “The apple does not fall far from the tree.” This adage is as viable today as it was when it was first spoken. It takes super-human effort to break away from the mold that made us. It can be done; of this we can be assured. But it order to gain more from the future, we must be willing to learn more of the past, lest we repeat it The various pieces in this book strive to point out better ways of doing things, giving examples of those who have done just this: gained a new future by releasing the old and outworn ways and means of living. I happen to be one of those persons, which is why I want to share these ideas with you, the Reader. It is my prayer that some of these pieces will entertain you, but that more will enlighten.
